Naarden the Art fair – Now and then

The very first fair was started in January 1998 by InterEvent couple Johan and Edith Rissik under the name Kunst & Antiek Weekend Naarden. Praised for its intimate setting and hospitable reception, 'Naarden' grew in two decades into one of the most important art fairs in the Netherlands: NAARDEN the Art fair. Since its foundation, the Grote Kerk Naarden, a monumental pearl from the fifteenth century, has formed a beautiful backdrop for the event that attracts thousands of art lovers every year. The 65 galleries, antique dealers and art dealers from the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany present a stunning collection of art and antiques, including paintings, sculptures, art objects, furniture, jewelry and photography.

NAARDEN the Art fair distinguishes itself by the high quality of its offering. This niche fair has also evolved over the years with today's tastes. Contemporary art is becoming an increasingly important part of the wide range that you can find there. In recent years, rare vintage watch collections have also been present.

The Grote Kerk Naarden

Since its founding in 1998, NAARDEN the Art fair has been held in the Grote Kerk Naarden. The Grote Kerk Naarden was consecrated in 1479 and is one of the most iconic, monumental church buildings in the Netherlands. A Beacon of Holland, a landmark between land and water, with a breathtaking interior. There are three organs, two of which are national monuments. The painted barrel vault from 1518 is unique in the Netherlands. It covers the entire length of the building and shows the passion story of Jesus in 11 panels, with 11 panels opposite that show prefigurations (pre-images) from the Old Testament. The stories come together in the Last Judgment. A major restoration of the barrel vault is planned for 2024. In addition to NAARDEN the Art fair, the St. Matthew Passion of the Dutch Bach Society is performed in the Grote Kerk every year around Easter. For three hours the audience will be immersed in the music of the St. Matthew Passion, about the passion story of Christ according to the evangelist St. Matthew.
